Researching ancillary product: Production Pitch

- Five words to describe overall theme/style:
Futuristic/ Geometric/ Simple/ Graphic/ Creative
- I will have four panels for my digipak

- I have decided that I will not be creating a magazine however I will be creating a poster for my digipak.

Planning of Ancillary products: Photo short-list

These are the photos I will use:

The top photo will be used for the front cover of the digipak, and I will use one of the bottom two for the advertisement (depending on the orientation of the advertisement)

Planning ancillary product: Overview of artist costume & location

Planning of Ancillary products: Advertisement mock-up

This is the advertisement I designed to appear in a music magazine such as NME (where Disclosure have featured themselves). I wanted to have a full-length photo of myself on the right hand side with my name on top. The album cover is one of the biggest things on the advertisement, which is a good thing. To improve this advertisement, I will add additional information, inbetween the album cover and myself, such as social media information and possibly a QR code.

Planning of Ancillary products: Digipak mock-up

Front Cover

Inside Cover

For my front cover, I decided to have a close up of myself in black and white, but my red lipstick is highlighted. Because of the logo my group have made up, I wanted to have my initials in black, and the rest of my name in white (all in the same font). I also had the album title in the bottom right corner in red (to match the lipstick) in a different font, so the front didn't look too boring and plain.
For the track listing, I decided to have it centred with no track numbers because from my research I did beforehand, a lot of albums follow this convention. I also added the crucial information at the back.

For the inside cover, I wanted to have a red disc, and although some of the writing is in black, after designing it, I have now decided I want it in white as I think it would look better. On the left panel, I decided to have a fake polaroid picture of myself holding a handwritten note for the fans. I am undecided on whether to have the background colour either white or black; this is a decision I will make when it comes to making the digipak.

Planning ancillary products: Photos that I will be using

The Screening!!

Today was the screening of our music videos at The Screen At The Green. We watched everyone's video and got feedback from the audience on what they liked/disliked about it. I particularly wanted to get the crowd audience on the arguing scene and wanted to know whether or not it suited the video.

Information for Album Cover

Planning of Ancillary products: Costume and location

For the costume, I will wear a plain black shirt with lightwash jeans as I wanted to keep it casual, because electronic artists don't have emphasis on what they're wearing (unlike pop artists).

As a group, we decided to take the photos against a plain white wall (so preferably a photography studio) so when it comes to using it on Photoshop, the pictures will be easy to manipulate without having any 'noise' in the background.

Planning of Ancillary products: Inspirations

For my album cover inspirations, I looked at Chase & Status' album No More Idols, and what I gathered from that, is a close-up black and white image with coloured font around it.

But because my artist is female, I took some inspiration from Ellie Goulding (a female electronic artist) and her newest album Halycon. Similar to Chase & Status, the album cover is in black and white, however, this time, it was a picture of her and that is why I will have a photo of myself on the cover, so my audience and fans will know who I am and what I look like.

Planning of Ancillary products: Short list

Fonts:

  • To create synergy between the ancillary products and the music video, I plan to use the same font we used in the music video (Century Gothic).
  • Because it's a simple font, I want to use a different font (possibly Respire or Rockwell), which looks like a font electronic artists would use.
Colours:
  • Although electronic can get away with using multiple colours, I want to stick to the do's and don'ts list and only use three different colours
  • As a result of this, I decided to stick with a black and white colour scheme with red accents (such as fonts, highlights, possible stars on the advertisement)
Layout:
  • I want to have a six-panel digipak (front cover, track listing, CD placement, thank you note, behind the scenes photo, photo with artist)
  • For the advertisement, I will have the CD cover in the bottom left corner, a head-to-toe photo of me on the right, and all the text above the CD cover
Design:
  • For the digipak, I want to have a close-up photo of myself on the front cover in black&white, but have my red lipstick highlighted
  • The CD itself will be red with white font
  • The track listing panel will be a white background with black font for the song titles and red font for any featuring artists
  • All important and required information needed on the digipak will be in black font along the bottom of the digipak

Planning of Ancillary Products: Photo short list

These are the photos I plan to use:

I plan to use the close up (top picture) for the front cover of my digipak as it is a good photo to use. The bottom two will depend on whether I want to have a landscape or portrait advertisement

Geometric Shape Design Pratice

Here is an example that I designed of how I am going to do the graphic Illustration of Shenaya on the album cover and the rest of the advertisement. As you can see it is very intricate and you can still see her face clearly. I will have Shenaya central of the album cover with her name above her and the album name below her.

Research: Planing The Ancillary Product (Planning and Final Idea)

Photoshop Practice

Ancillary Products: Do's and don'ts

Research: Analysis of real ancillary work

Research of Ancillary products: Photoshop practise

To get ourselves familiar with photoshop (and learn what not to do), we spent the lesson recreating our own digipak, correcting the mistakes previous students have done. I stuck to the do-list by having a simple colour scheme of three-four colours and to stick to one or two fonts. I also have the barcode on at a reasonable size alongsize a record label logo and the information to go with it..

Research of Ancillary products: Analysis of real ancillary products

As part of my research, I have decided to look at artists' (who are similar to my own) ancillary products for inspirations as well as to see what regularly does or doesn't feature in that particular genre. I looked at Chase & Status (No More Idols), Magnetic Man (Magnetic Man) and the original artist of my music video, Disclosure (Settle).

Researching ancillary products: Summary of class discussion

Research: Previous students' ancillary products

In today's lesson, we looked at previous students' ancillary products, analysed them against the mark scheme and give them a score out of 20 (10 for advertisement, 10 for digipak). What I liked about Group 28's was that:
  • the photos were clear and not stretched
  • the text suits the pop genre
  • all the important and relevant information is there
  • the synergy is there between the advert, digipak and video
There wasn't much that I didn't like about it other than the photo of the girl goes across the two front panels, but I think that's just being picky!

Overall, I gave it a 17/20 (9 for digipak, 8 for advertisement), but it turns out Group 28 got 18/19!

Researching ancillary products: Photoshop practice

In today’s lesson we were given a tutorial on how to use basic editing tools in Photoshop. Some things that I learnt today is how to take away any background colour from an image, how to use the blur tool. As well as Photoshop tools I have also learnt about the different elements that should be on digipak’s for example information about the album or album, bar code, album number, artist name, album name and image of artist (depending on genre), record label, producer and tracklist. Below is the digipak that I create in photoshop

Production of music video: All effects added

From the music videos we was watching as we was editing we was influenced by some special effects that we saw. Having the credits for Shenaya's name and the title of the track would make the audience know who exactly she is and what she is singing. The girls and I thought that this would be a good thing to have as we didn't want our target audience to be clueless about who she is, especially that she's a debut artist. We decided to use the bad TV effect followed by the white noise to cut the music and have the arguing scene. At first we wanted to have this at the beginning but it didn't feel or look right. We was also influenced by the Kaleidoscope effect and put it at when the beat drops at 2:56 this gave it a fun, vibrant visual feel to the track which makes you want to get up and dance.

Relfection: Research, Planing and Production

Last time i reflected on my blogging I felt that I didn't need to complicate my ideas and explanation and use more technologies to present my work. Since then i think that i have met these targets and found new ways of communicating with the target audience for the video. I have 79 blogs with 40 of them being individual.

To Improve I feel that i could do extra blogs on research and music videos/advertisement that i find inspiring which i could incorporate into my work.

Production of Music Video: Reflection on Progress

From the last time I reflected on my progress, I feel as if I have actually improved this time. I have used more types (and new types) of technologies to present my work better as well as added extra blogs that weren't on the checklist. Starting to feel like a proper blogger!

Production of music video: Reflection on progress

I think that my blog details for the research, planning and construction stages of my music video has been consistent throughout and they have enough detail. I am happy with the amount of blogs and details that I done. In reflection to the targets that I have set myself I have met most of them: I have done external research and created extra blogs and use a wide variety of different technology for my blogs. I have also spoken about problems and solutions that I may have come across during lessons, which has enabled me to be conscious of improvements that I have made over the last few lessons. In total I have 83 blogs and about 2/3 are my own individual blogs.

Production of Music Video: Penultimate Day for Editing

Today is the penultimate day for editing and it's more about adding final touches (such as any other special effects) and making sure there are no glitches in the timeline.

Production of Music Video: Rough notes and ideas for: Evaluation Question 4

For Question 4 ('What have you learned from your audience feedback?'), I will revisit the audience feedback from the rough cut, final video and ancillary products stages. From there, I will talk about how I used the feedback for improvement (not possible for all cases) and talk about what I would have like to have done differently.

In terms of technologies, I think producing a vlog would be best as I will be able to explain myself and I could use Camtasia to edit it to make it look more presentable.

Production of music video: Skills development

During the last couple of lessons I have learnt so much about filming as well as editing. In terms of filming I have learn that I should always make sure that the actor/performer could be heard properly. Also you must finsh a scene before you finished filming at an angle so that it’s not difficult to cut when it comes to editing. In terms of editing I have learnt how to added special effects such as BAD TV, colour filters, inserting transparent images, fading in & our, applying slow motion and borders. As well as editing skills and filming skills I have also learnt how to communicate with my group  effectively and making sure that we all participate in filming, editing & group blogs.

Question 4 Ideas

For question 4 the technologies that I'm planning on using is PowToon to talk about how and why i used a particular software to a specific section of planning.
For the planning stage i'm planning on using Prezi to talk about how i used the different media technologies to make it more interactive for the target audience with examples of how I got feedback to the ideas we had.

Audience review

In our pitch we had to talk about who our intended target audience would be for the music video. I done interviews with several people with different styles to see what they would expect to see when I told them what song my group and I was doing. Our teacher Rebecca, showed us a website called YouGov which is a website that gives you a profile of the average person is a fan of an particular artist. We wanted to see if were correct with our intended target audience comparing to the data correlated by YouGov.

From the image above you can see how the average Disclosure fan is
  • Female aged 18-24
  • Lives in the Midlands
  • Real Interest in celebrities
  • Tend to shop at: ASOS, Urban Outfitters, Top Shop, River Island
  • Strong Interest in other electronic artists
  • and reads NME

Production of music video: Ideas for evaluation question two

Research: Revisit of the Audience

A while ago, I did a blog post about our target audience and I made a Facebook profile of someone in our target audience.

Charlotte Smith is:
  • a young female (19 years old)
  • a 'city-goer' (lives in London)
  • a frequent reader of NME magazine and the Metro newspaper
  • a sales assistant at Urban Outfitters
  • a regular shopper at the Co-Operative
Since that blog post, I have come across YouGov; a survey website that identifies the type of fans a group/artist/fanbase have according to their demographic, lifestyle, personality, brands, entertainment, online and media.

And it seems like I had most of Charlotte's personal aesthetics correctly. YouGov has a identified a typical Disclosure fan (in a survey of 61) to be:
  • a young female (18-24)
  • a 'city-goer' (most likely to be living in the Midlands, London or Central Scotland)
  • a frequent shopper at Urban Outfitters
  • a frequent reader of NME magazine
Obviously, I did miss out on some points, but I think most of the points seemed accurate.
