Research: Today's lesson (filming rough music video)

Today, we started filming our lipsync video (which is our equivalent to last year's prelim).

We shot multiple base-tracks, maybe more than we needed but it does give us options and variety. We filmed base-tracks with me against a wall, me walking towards the camera (in a number of different angles) and me sitting on the bench. There were lots of different close-ups, which is essential for music videos.

Here is some photographic evidence:

Research: Today's lesson (filming rough music video)

Today we filmed our preliminary music video of Delilah's- Never Be Another. This song doesn't have a music video to go with it, so we created a storyboard and filmed several base tacks from different angles, locations so that  it met Vernallis' theory on music videos.

Research: Todays lesson (filming rough music video)

In todays lessons we made a storyboard that included different shot types, locations and movements for our rough music video. However once we finished doing our plan we were told that music videos don’t often start with a linier shot therefore we had rethink the plan. After rethinking we then decided to add two establish shots at the start of the video. We then went out to film our shots. The roles that we decided to take on were: Shenay performing for the song, Rojal filming the shots and I was directing. While filming we went to a variety of different locations that we though linked with the genre of the song that we chose. Two examples of the locations we used were the college (to take a shot of our performer singing on the ground) and the park (to take a shot of our performer singing on a park bench). Throughout the filming we tried to used the fig-rig as much as possible so that we had a lot of movement in our shots, but as well as the fig-rig we also used the tripod to take the shot of the time-lapse shot for our establishing shot. Overall it was a very successful lesson, although we had to re-take a few shots because people interrupted the shot. Nevertheless we got a lot of footage done for the music video, worked well  as a team and taken photos as evidence for our filming. Next lessons we will start editing our video and start thinking about different editing techniques that are typical to the genre of the song that we could use.

Research: Todays lesson (lip sync tutorial)

This is my evaluation of the lip sync tutorial and reflection on how well I followed Vernallis theory in the post production stage and what I’ve learnt.

Research: Group costume, setting and prop activity

The song was have chosen is Delilah - Never be another. The genre for this song is Pop/RnB therefore the use of costume often links to the location/setting. For example if it was in a studio to perform they'd be a little dressed down, whereas if they were in a club performing they'd have a more shocking outfit. However for the song we have chosen, we did some research on the artist Delilah and we noticed that she wears casual/trendy clothing. So for the person that will be lip syncing in our song we have decided that they will be wearing jeans, a shirt, beanie, leather jacket and trainers. As shown below:

In Delilah's videos she barely uses any props in her music videos, So to continue into with the continuity, the performer (Shenaya) won't be using any props as it's a personal song so she'll be mainly singing directly to the camera.

We chose to have the setting in an urban, outdoorsy area as pop/RnB tend to have, especially British artists. We decided to incorporate a time-lapse of the busy urban traffic to reinforce this. Our video also has some establishing shots which gives the viewers a sense of where we are.

Research: Mainstream vs Independent signed artists

There's a clear difference between mainstream artists and independent artists are pretty much the same as having a mainstream or independent film company behind you:

Mainstream artists have a large support behind them, in terms of money and creative control; Independent artists don't have a large support behind them.

For example: One Direction are signed to Syco - one of the biggest record companies in the world, signing acts from all types of genre (pop, opera, rap, etc.).
Because of this big company behind them, they are able to afford better advertisements, websites, merchandise and bigger tours. But because of they're representing a big label, there is more pressure for them to keep their fans happy and keep away from any bad press. But independent band Lanterns on the Lake are signed to Bella Union - an independent label who signs acts from an indie, folk and 70s pop genre. They too have a website, merchandise and tours, but to a much smaller scale as they don't have a financial backing behind them.

Depending on your definition of success, merchandise and ancillary products can define how successful an artist is. It is likely that mainstream artists depend on these products to be successful because they want to make money and the sales of those products will bring them the money. Independent artists tend to think that having audiences at their tours and people listening to their music as being successful.

Both artists' fans can find out information about them through social media, though mainstream artists will have more access to different types of social media, as they will have more fans.

Personally, I would prefer to be signed to an independent label as I would like to have control of my music and would like to be able to meet my fans without security having to be a problem. But being signed to a mainstream artist would be nice as I could make lots of money.

Research: Mainstream vs Indie

Mainstream Vs. Indie
One direction vs Lanterns on the lake

Success has no true definition. One Direction is one of the biggest boy band on the planet and was had crafted by Simon Cowell in 2010 via X-factor. He then signed them to his record label company Syco Entertianment. Their debut album sold a staggering 4.5million copies and currently working on their new studio album. Lanterns on the lake is an indie rock band from Newcastle. Success for them has come in a completely different way comparing to One Direction. They released to EP albums and a single by themselves and even had one of their tracks used in a film called Where the soldiers come from. As well as this the had their first tour in America earlier this year.

Advantage
Disadvantage
Mainstream (One Direction)
·         More publicity.
·         Bigger profit.
·         Reach out to a wider audience.
·         Able to reach out to the audience on different social media websites.
·         Available to distribute their music on different platforms.
·         Short shelf spam (eventually their target audience will get older and eventually get tired of them)
·         Have to act a particular way so that they don’t lose following.
·         The majority of the money goes to the record label
·         Less freedom with the type of music they release.
Indie (Lanterns on the lake)
·         Release music that is personal.
·         More freedom to do what they want.
·         Get more profit as most of the money doesn’t go to the company.
·         Long shelf spam as they are not in the public eye.
·         Not recognised as much
·         Not many fans
·         Make a profit but it’s not a lot
·         Are not able to do big arenas concert

Merchandise and ancillary products is important for the success for both mainstream and independent for bands but it will have a greater impact for mainstream bands. This is because mainstream bands have a short shelf life expectancy so are heavily dependent on their music to grab the attention of their target audience, which will make them buy anything the possibly have available so that they can feel closer to their favorite band member. Indie bands have the same dilemma to a certain extent. Although they depend on extra profit that they can get their hands on, the products isn't the main priority on their agenda. People hearing the music that is personal to them matters more as they will have more freedom with what they make.

Research: Mainstream v Indie

This blog post is about the indie vs. mainstream record label. I have inserted the information on an app called Evernote. The two bands that I have researched are One Direction and Lanterns on the lake.

Below is the hyperlink for the Evernote document.

Research: Costumes, setting and location

This is the first video that I have analysed. It is by an American rock band named Kings of Leon, the name of the song is Sex on fire. I have analysed the song using a website named thinglink.

This is the second video that I have analysed. It is by an American hiphop/Rnb artist named Drake, the name of the song is Started from the bottom. I have analysed the song using a website named thinglink.

This is the third video that I have analysed. It is by an American pop artist named Beyoncè, the name of the song is Countdown. I have analysed the song using a website named thinglink.

  •         I noticed that amount of costumes used in videos depends on the genre of the song because the costumes vary. For example in Pop or Rnb videos there is a lot of costumes unlike in Rock videos which one or no change of costume.
  •            The differences between the genres and the amount of style of the costumes are they are more expensive and higher end in pop and Rnb whereas they are more casual and affordable clothing in rock.
  •       In Rnb the location and setting is often shot in parties and expensive houses with beautiful scenery, however in pop videos the locations and settings are often inside in studios or settings where dance routines can be carried out. Then in rock videos the locations are often in warehouses or settings with dark lighting.
  •     There is a great significant in the use of props in the genres that I have analysed because without the props the audience wouldn’t analyse the genre or they wouldn’t feel any visual pleasure without certain props. For example in rock if the band didn’t have their instruments then the audience wouldn’t be used to this and probably won’t feel any visual pleasure, the same with Rnb with fast cars and jewelry and pop with dancers and high fashion clothing.
