Reflecting: Summer Work

A music video is a recorded performance of a song that often includes dancing and visual images. A music video is used to advertise the artist, song or band or all. The difference between a music video and a TV program is that there is dancing and visual images but also there is a lot more freedom compared to TV programs. For example a TV program has a script whereas a music video does not need one.

The first TV program to consume music videos was MTV. It was launched at 12:01 on 1st August 1981. MTV offered artist showcase videos to promote their song and album. They also helped the VJ’s to become pop phenomenon’s. It was a massive success because it was both audio and visual which attracted to the audience, as there were more senses.

The first ever music video that was streamed on MTV was called Video killed the radio star by Biggles. The cost of the video was £150k and it was shot in the day. The audience said that the video was too violent but this was probably because it was the first music video they had ever seen. However the first video to world premiere on MTV had a completely different reaction. The name of that video was called Thriller by Michael Jackson. The cost of the video was $500k and it was released 2nd December 1983. It was 14 minutes long and was played on MTV twice an hour. The video was voted as the most influential pop music video of all time.

Year’s later music videos are still being made and are more advanced as ever, due to the increase in technology there are better quality videos, improvement in audio and more developed stories. For example we now able to view music videos on the web 2.0, YouTube and Vevo, we are also allowed to actively interact with the video by liking, sharing and commenting. Thriller, Telephone by Lady Gaga and Gangnam Style by PSY are good examples of the power that a music video has because they have millions of views and have went viral all because they have created visual pleasure for the audience.
